Developing a nation-wide communications and early warning system has been one of the many ways the European Union (EU) has contributed to the wellbeing of Vincentians. At a cost of Euro 210, 817.30 the EU in 2004 assisted St.Vincent and the Grenadines to develop a National Emergency Communication Enhancement Programme (NECEP) under STABEX 1994.
The programme helped to improve the local disaster preparedness capability to educate and alert communities of impending emergencies. The funds were also used to facilitate the management of disasters at the community level. A number of initiatives were taken under this project, such as procuring consultancy to advise on the establishment of a nation-wide AM broadcasting service, and the purchasing of a broadcasting transmitter, along with other equipment.
